When we asked Ella Catliff, Editor of brilliant blog http://www.ella-lapetiteanglaise.com, to give one Spring Summer 2012 trend a catwalk-to-reality road test exclusively for Grazia Daily, she jumped at the chance to go ladylike. Here’s how she got on…
I’ve always admired girls who can rock the model-off-duty look, especially this season what with it being the Olympic year and all. But while I can appreciate the cool factor of Isabel Marant’s sell-out wedge high tops, sports luxe just isn’t my cup of tea. Tracksuit bottoms with heels? Not on your life. Flatforms and flip flops? No thank you!
Instead I’ll be taking my que from a certain Mr Marc Jacobs whose Spring Summer 2012 collection for Louis Vuitton was the very epitome of ladylike chic. Give me peplums and pastels and Peter Pan collars, cinched waists and kitsch prints galore. I mean, what better way to get in the mood for summer than with delicate dresses in sugar sweet shades? Yep, as far as I’m concerned, candy coloured confections and broiderie anglaise are the order of the day; laser cut lace adorned with whimsical bows.
While Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang may be embracing haute sport, it wasn’t just Marc Jacobs who went down a more girlish route. The SS12 catwalks were awash with sugar and spice and all things nice, from Dior’s chiffon goddess gowns to Miu Miu’s mint green court shoes. Back here in London, homegrown designers got in on the act with Erdem offering up garden party elegance while Meadham Kirchoff gave the look a madcap spin via cartoon applique and marabou feathers in eye-popping hues. You could opt for retro Americana a la Miuccia Prada or channel 1950s femininity like Jonathan Saunders. Ladylike chic comes in many variations, just add kitten heels, pop socks and you’re ready to go.
