Jessie J before and after her fash-formation
‘Ooh, Jessie J’s gone all Beyonce on us!’ Grazia Daily gasped when the songstress bounced onto the stage at London’s Roundhouse on Saturday. We were expecting to see her in another neon-bright jumpsuit accessorised with her trademark bullet-proof fringe or another colour-popping wig. Instead, Jessie was looking positively ladylike in a glitzy gold frock by Vivienne Westwood – couture, no less.
With a plunging neckline and a thigh-skimming hemline, accessorised with ladylike strappy sandals, it showcased her enviably toned bod and was more glam Tinkerbell than edgy tomboy. What’s more, instead of a super-sleek bob, Ms J sported loose tousled waves with not a splash of red in sight. Kim Kardashian, eat yer heart out. Her makeup was similarly more grown-up than we’ve seen before – glowy and golden rather than flashy and kooky. Hmm, is Jessie’s wardrobe heading in a new direction, we wondered.
Today, we have the answer and it’s an almighty YES. The 24-year-old has apparently parted ways with her long-term stylist Karl Willet. You’ll remember Karl was in charge of Jessie’s wardrobe on The Voice and he packed it with funky prints, bold body stockings, flesh-flashing mini-skirts and clompy boots.
But in her recent Grazia interview, the starlet told us that she was looking to freshen up her look. ‘I started to look like a cartoon character with the fringe and the cat suits. Yes, I want to change and mix it up. I want to change my hair, change my style. I want to be allowed to grow’. Well, mission accomplished.
So who’s the stylist behind JJ’s demure new look? Step forward Cobbie Yates, upcoming fashion pro and brother of Reggie Yates – yep, Reggie ‘TV presenter’ Yates. Who’da thunk it? The pair apparently met while filming The Voice as Cobbie was dressing Reggie, who was co-hosting with Holly Willoughby. A source told the Mail Online, ‘Jessie has worked with Karl for a long time but she decided it’s time for a change and she gave him the elbow’. Plus, after being congratulated on by one of his Twitter followers, Cobbie tweeted that working with Jessie is ‘a dream’.
Considering the singer’s rumoured to have left the BBC talent show, a new direction makes perfect sense. And if we’ve learnt anything from Madonna, it’s that reinvention is the key to longevity. We can’t wait to see more of Jessie’s fash-formation – but in the meantime do tell: are you a fan of JJ’s new look?
